Vague Ideas over Burgers

Beer and burgers replaced pizza as fuel for the meeting at B&D Burgers in Savannah. Though parking was a pain to suffer through, the amicable atmosphere between the interns soon made up for it. At this meeting, each intern pitched their more concrete ideas for the solutions that were enhanced at the previous meeting.

Ideas were still vague but slowly after back and forth of concepts and parts that needed to be stressed they became more concrete in the second floor of the burger joint. Though the final film idea for each solution won’t be voted upon until later; the brainstorm of ideas coming on in full force results in hilarity and out of the box ideas.

Polaroids were even taken as a flashback to simpler times in cinematography. Beers were sampled and happy hour enjoyed by some.

Rainy Day, Pizza, Brainstorms

The storm raging outside didn’t affect the shark tank inside the Hamilton Hall fishbowl. Fueled and energized by every college student's favorite food...pizza! With the exceptionally greasy pizza of Sweet Melissa’s pumping through their veins the Ocean Exchange Film Interns brainstormed potential movie ideas for the ten finalists. Each intern had claimed a finalist solution to present the basic summary and a handful of potential pitches for it at this nights meeting.

Though some solutions may have required a Ph.D. to decipher, the pizza fueled brainpower helped see the interns into burning the midnight oils. Ideas are limitless, especially when digital effects are involved. Ideas tossed about included superheroes, sign twirler competitions, Michael Bolton torture, and a LEGO movie parody.

Bouncing ideas about, the interns strove to find the main purpose of each solution to determine the main focus of the film. Adviser, Mehmet Caglayan, pushed the students to think about their senses and the scale, how they could make the solutions tangible. He told the students not to take the solutions too literally.

The rain outside soon faded as the brainstorm session drew to a close. Each person left, tasked with the need to nail down on the film ideas that had been brought to attention and approved of by the rest of the group.

First Meeting

The day was like any other Tuesday, warm and unbecoming. Unbeknownst to the country club members of Grand Lake Lodge Club House, in the very ballroom above them a new adventure was being embarked upon. Savannah College of Art and Design students were gathering as participants of Ocean Exchanges Film Internship. These interns would be called upon to create ten short two minute films for the ten finalists in the Ocean Exchange. Even the unpleasant aromas of the tiny elevator could not deter the brilliance and excitement that radiated off of the students.

Introductions were made and torture methods discussed. It was necessary after all to determine the best form of punishment for those who arrived late. The current group, though there are spots still open for it to grow, currently consists of Quentin Tarantino fans, cat lovers, and gamers. After going over the finalists list, the meeting was adjourned and the majority of the group departed for pizza.

Pizza is after all the fuel of college students, building friendships and keeping blood sugar up since the very beginning of time. Riverboat Pizza Company provided delicious pizzas and absurdly large calzones, though they had no bread to satisfy the sandwich requests.

The Final Push

It seems like our post production team hasn't slept in a while and the films are proof to show all their hard work.  We cannot wait for you to see these amazing pieces! Cort Atkinson, from Ocean Exchange, recently viewed our films as well.

Meetings With Special Guests

Helloooo everyone!  We want to update you on the post production progress.

Earlier this month, we meet with Jim Goodlett, President of Morris Technology.  He gave us invaluable information on the ever expanding interweb.  He also taught us that social media is a great way to get the buzz out on the projects we are working on.  So to step up our game, we are #hashtagging amongst other new media moves.

On another meeting also met with Anne Shira. We talked with her about the Galla what is expected and who we would be possibly meeting! We are so excited to meet everyone and we hope that everyone loves our films.

As for the ten films we are finishing up, our team is hard at work still!  Laura and Rachel (our editors) have cut some amazing pieces together.  Our directors, Ben and Dary, have been with them on this process. Lulu and Collin (our sound artists) are compiling great foley, fixing dialogue, composing music, and mixing. And Brittany and Jesse (our motion graphics artist and visual effects artist) is going non stop full speed ahead.

HAPPY LABOR DAY! (+ Updates)

There was so much food; hotdogs, hamburgers, chips & salsa, deserts, and beer and wine (what's celebration without it)! In the mists of all the fun, we also screened our rough cuts and thought of some catchy tag lines. The post production phase of our films is going well! we have less than a week to get a majority put together and then a few more days of fine tuning.

Our team is down to our last week of post-production!  Our directors, editors, post sound team, visual effects artists, and motion media artists are hard at work.  We are excited about the rough cuts we have going on right now.  Just wait until October comes around!  We'll make you wonder, giggle, and even dazzle you with a spell.

Film #8 (BTS) – Sergei, The Salty Sea Dog

“The High Flying Adventures of Sergei, The Salty Sea Dog”

A highflying adventure of epic proportions!

Another of Dan’s ideas and in written collaboration with Ben Eades a story told through the eyes of a dog and his best friend the radio operator, saving the world one hot air balloon ride at a time.

This was an epic production for us as filmmakers. We knew from the start that it was going be some work, and that’s why it was put to last of our schedule to film. We had live dogs, puppet dog hands, miniatures, and we shot a in a WWII museum.

This production was also a two day shoot. The first day of shooting was a night shoot at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum (Thank you Christy). We filmed from 5pm-10:30pm in the Quoset Hut. We rented air force uniform from Acme Costumes in Garden City, Georgia. This is the location where we filmed out radio announcer character played by Jeremy Lister.

The second day was very fun we were in studio. This is where we were filming the hot air balloon scenes. Dan’s girlfriend has a dog named Finn, a long haired Jack Russell Terrier, was our star that day. Rachel created a hot air balloon basket for Finn to sit in while we filmed him. As feared and predicted, Finn was camera shy but still a joy to work with! After Finn acting debut, we began with the miniatures and some beautiful lighting techniques provided by our other interns, Erin and Taylor. After the miniatures we began with the puppet dog hands.

It was a fun shoot and as a producer on the team I am so proud of everyone’s hard work they put in. Throughout the productions everyone wore multiple job hats and kept the budget in mind. We are moving into post promptly and I am sure we will have some high quality work come out of this awesome filming experience.

Film #7 (BTS) – Wizards

“Wizards”

Written by Dan Irons and Andrew Lainhart, an elaborate script depicting wizards in a dungeon discussing “new magic” aka- science.  With various different props and a high speed conversation these wizards help provide answers to discussing a solution. These wizards are played by the very talented Joshua Bolla and enthusiastic Ajaye Franklin.

The set was made in around 4 hours, with brick flats provided in Studio A. This set had various props bought at Party City, Jo-Anns, and Michael’s  – good thing its almost Halloween season!Our production designer Rachel Dotson is doing an amazing job using a budget and creating masterpieces!

Even though it was a long night of filming it was a very successful set!
